It is Love that Does the Work

This is a moving story in which a woman supports a family all on her own, under heavy financial pressure, and looks after her husband who has brain cancer.

This is a tear-provoking story in which people offer money to help others in need.
This is not a fiction. It is a true story of us. The protagonist is Xie Qicheng -- a student from poverty-stricken Baise, a boy who is both unfortunate and fortunate.

In September 2003, Xie Qicheng got financial support from Mr. Clifford Pang for his outstanding performance on his entrance exam, and was lucky enough to become a member of Clifford School. With such a privilege, he did not slacken his efforts. He studied very hard, and became an example to his classmates. However, unexpectedly, he ran across an unprecedented difficulty -- his father was striken with brain cancer, and the bills as thick as snowflakes had to be paid for the treatment. This drove the poor family into an even worse condition. A month of hospital treatment left the family without a penny. So his mother had to ask her son for help.

One can imagine that it takes great courage for a mother to ask for financial help from her son, a mother who would try to let her son concentrate on his studies. Yes, we understood, and we were touched, that was why you found tears in our eyes, and that was why there was emergency money found in the donation box.

On the very day when the bad news came, Mr. Wang Hancheng the homeroom teacher and the students of G10B made plans for Xie Qicheng. Their final decision was to ask the entire school to help Xie. With this proposal, the staff and students of the school gave their help by contributing a large sum of money. The donation box, which was made by G10B classmates with their own hands, soon got full to the brim.

Some donated 50 yuan, some 500, and some 1000, amounting to 26,504.9 yuan, which was immediately sent to the parents of Xie Qicheng through the post office.

It is a truth very simple and pure that no one can assure himself of eternal peace. Seldom can one sustain misfortune independently. Luckily, people have a loving heart and with concerted care we can cope. The misfortune befalling Xie Qicheng has revealed two kinds of love: one is parental, the other is social. The remittance of 26,504.9 yuan maybe does not matter much. What matters is that we care, and because of this, life is beautiful, even in a disaster.

  ^Let there be love ̄.
